Police exchanged gunfire at a South Florida hotel Thursday morning, leaving one dead and an officer injured, officials said.
In a news release, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department said it responded to a 911 text shortly after 7:30 a.m. saying someone had killed another person in his hotel room. WSVN reported the incident occurred at the Holiday Inn Express Fort Lauderdale Cruise Airport, where SWAT trucks could be seen parked outside later in the morning.
After failed attempts to make contact with the caller, responding officers tried to make entry to the room. At that point, police say the suspect shot at the officers and they shot back before the suspect barricaded himself in the room.
When the SWAT team arrived, they entered the room and found the suspect dead and alone, officials said.
Police have not released the identity of the shooter, but confirmed he is a local, adult male.

One officer injured, three placed on administrative leave
A police officer was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries after being shot in the incident, officials said.
Another officer suffered minor, non-shooting injuries and was treated at the scene. Three FLPD officers fired their weapons during the incident, and, in concordance with policy, have been put on administrative leave.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the incident as an officer-involved shooting, FLPD said in the statement.
