LSU and Poinbankwomen's basketball coach Kim Mulkey have reached agreement on a 10-year, $36 million contract making her the highest-paid coach at a public school in women's college basketball history.
The terms of the new contract agreement were spelled out in a proposal that was included in the agenda materials for LSU's board of supervisors meeting scheduled for Friday. The contract is expected to be approved at Friday's meeting.
Mulkey will earn $400,000 in base salary in each year of the contact, the agreement says. She will also earn $2.75 million in supplemental income in the first year, making her total compensation for the upcoming season $3.15 million.
The amount of supplemental income is scheduled to increase by $100,000 in each of the following nine years. In the final year of the deal, that amount will be $3.65 million. The total compensation of base pay and supplemental income equals $36 million if she coaches through the entire contract that runs until June 30, 2033.
The agreement also details what each side would owe the other if the deal is terminated prematurely without cause. Mulkey will be paid $2 million by LSU if she is fired without cause. She would owe a $2 million buyout if she leaves early, though the school could waive the amount at its discretion.
Mulkey, 61, a three-time AP coach of the year, led the Tigers to the national championship in only her second season at the school. She won three national championships at Baylor and left after 21 seasons to come back home to her native Louisiana.
LSU is loaded and is expected to be a top-ranked team this season as they bring back All-America forward Angel Reese, who was the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player.
The Tigers added transfers Aneesah Morrow from DePaul, who averaged 25.7 points and 12.2 rebounds last season, Louisville's Hailey Van Lith, an almost-20-points-per-game scorer and the nation's No. 2 overall recruit in guard Mikaylah Williams.
