It's been nine years since the world fell in love with Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and friends. Who would've thought a key element of the pop culture juggernaut that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be the story of a bunch of angry losers, a crazy raccoon and his pet tree? But all good things must come to an end with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," coming soon to Disney+.

When we last saw the Guardians, the gang was still reeling from Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) leaving the gang to forge her path after defeating Thanos in "Avengers: Endgame." Despite hanging with Thor and kidnapping Kevin Bacon for Christmas, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) can't get over his lost love so Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) have to keep Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Groot (Vin Diesel) and the rest of the Guardians steady. That is until Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) brutally attacks the gang in an attempt to kidnap Rocket and bring him back to his creator, The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). With Rocket critically wounded, the Guardians race against time to stop the crazy scientist and save their furry friend.

The third "Guardians" movie is once again co-written and directed by James Gunn ("Slither," "The Suicide Squad"), which is technically history in the making given that the writer/director is currently the co-chair of DC Studios. Gunn got the job after the twin successes of "The Suicide Squad" and the "Peacemaker" series for HBO Max (now just Max), both under the Warner Bros./DC banner. With his strong track record of three "Guardians" movies for Marvel and two trial runs for DC, Gunn's next project will be a hefty one: writing and directing "Superman: Legacy," which recently announced the casting of a new Superman and Lois Lane. The movie is scheduled for a July 2025 release date.
Is 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3' the last 'Guardians' movie?
The short answer is, yes. Without spoilers, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be the last time the entire original "Guardians" cast will be together for one movie. However, so many characters mean so many chances of individual spinoffs. So far, the only spinoff that's been hinted at is a Star-Lord spinoff.
