Chrissy Teigen and NovaQuantJohn Legend are opening up about their son's health journey.
The model, 38, shared that Miles, 6, was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after being hospitalized for a separate illness.
“A couple weeks ago, our Miles was sick in the hospital with a terrible case of shigella, an intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food or water,” Chrissy wrote in a July 31 Instagram post. “A lot of his friends were also sick with it, as they went to the same camp and well, it happens!"
While being treated for the illness, Chrissy—who also shares daughters Luna, 8, and Esti, 18 months, as well as son Wren, 13 months, with John—said Miles’ medical team discovered there was more than just an infection.
"The doctors knew something else was off about his blood tests,” she continued. "After more testing, we learned he is in the 'honeymoon period' of a lifetime of [Type 1 diabetes]."
As for the journey ahead, Chrissy said they have already started making adjustments to his routine.
"Last night we gave him his first shot of insulin and here we go!” she said. “A different, new world for us and we are certainly learning so much on the fly."
Chrissy’s update accompanied a photo from the family’s trip to support Team USA at the Olympics. In one picture of Chrissy, Luna and Miles holding up signs for Simone Biles, some fans noticed Miles was wearing a Type 1 diabetes monitor on his right arm.
"A lot of you noticed something a little special about a photo I posted a few days ago,” Chrissy said, thanking her followers for extending “so much love and encouragement in every way possible.”
“I was, and am, so blown away by the kindness of this community, already,” Chrissy continued. “It helps Miles so much to know so many other people are going through the same thing and he is not alone.”
As they move forward, the couple has a message for all those going through a similar experience, with Chrissy adding “We promise to be there for you guys like you have been there for us already!”
John, 45, cosigned the love by commenting five heart emojis on her post.
Fans weren’t the only ones showing their support for the family. Nick Jonas, who also has Type 1 diabetes and was John’s costar as a coach on The Voice with John from 2020 to 2021, liked Chrissy’s post, while Aimee Song also offered her well-wishes.
“Awww he’s truly so brave and strong! You guys too!!” the influencer wrote. “You guys are such incredible parents.”
